Making Your Kauai Real Estate Dreams A Reality

Princeville at Hanalei >

Princeville, originally home to sugar plantations and a cattle ranch, got its name in 1860 in honor of Hawaii’s crown prince, Prince Albert. Centuries before Captain Cook landed on Kauai in 1778, Hawaiians farmed Taro in the lush valley of Hanalei and harvested the sea’s riches,. Westerners began cattle ranching and farming in the 1830s. Potatoes and fruit from Hanalei area farms were shipped to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush. Robert Wyllie, an adventurous Scotsman became the Kingdom of Hawaii’s minister of foreign affairs. In 1853 he acquired land near Hanalei which he made a sugar plantation. 1860 was the year that Wyllie named his sugar plantation Princeville, in honor of a visit by, (then two-year-old) Prince Albert and his parents, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. Tragically, the young prince died in 1862 at the age of four. Albert Wilcox bought the plantation in 1895, and Princeville became a ranch. Hawaiian cowboys once rode across the pastures of the family-run Princeville Ranch that today is home to appreciative vacationers and lucky residents.
